Greek public transportation Athens - Kalambaka?

January 7th, 2009
  • I am going back to Greece this January and will be staying in Athens. I'd love to head up the countryside and see Meteora near Kalambaka. I am not 21 yet so I can't rent a car; is there public transportation that will take me from Athens to Kalambaka? Is it doable in a day? How expensive is the trip?

  • You can the train or a coach bus. They are cheap and safe and they run daily. You can get the train from ''stathmos larissis''(the name of the train station in Athens).the ticket costs 20 euros and the journey lasts 4h and 50 minutes so returning is not doable in a day.The train leaves at 8.24 and 15.50.The train from Kalambaka to Athens leaves at 7.50,10.20.,15.20 and 18.05.Kalambaka and Meteora are lovely, you are gonna love it and don't forget to taste the local lamb in the oven. It's fantastic. You must also check out the lovely Nafpaktos,a town 3 hours away from Athens. If you need any more info or tips, send a message.

  • u can rent a car if u re 18 and older..it's not america here..ye there's surely transportation from athens to larisa and then u can go from larisa to kalambaka by train or by bus...i would prefer the train

  • From the KTEL Bus Station in the Kifisos area, you can take a bus to Trikala and from there to Kalambaka.

I do not know how much it costs though (I havent used public transportation in many years) but it is a lot cheper compared to renting a car... any car.
A rough estimate is about 40 Euros (one way ticket) and there are plenty of routes back and forth to Athens daily.

Once you reach Athens and settle on your hotel you might want to call the KTEL phone line and find out about routes and ticket prices.

I recommend against renting a car.
Greek county roads are rather... unfriendly if you are not used to that kind of driving conditions.
