Why has my dog stopped responding to his name?

January 6th, 2009
  • my dog, ziggy, is a pomeranian that's a few months old (not exact). He's done fine with his name before, but lately, he's just become less responsive. Why would a dog suddenly stop listening to his name?

  • maybe hes heard it too much and has become desensitized to it, or he could be having ear problems

  • Praise does wonders for our sense of hearing.

  • You have to say it really often so it gets its name in its head , if its not in its head by 12 to 16 weeks old you'll have to work even harder to let it learn...so you gotta keep saying it.

    Hope it helps!

  • go to the vet. maybe ziggy is hard of hearing.

  • You call it to much and he's ignoring you. Don't laugh- dogs can and do develop SELECTIVE HEARING. Call his name for a treat- and repeat- see if he responds then

  • maybe he's just stubborn, lol... It could be the hearing too, but if he still hears food and walk time and other things that he enjoys, i would say it's more of a selective hearing issue... Like alright, I get it, my name is Ziggy, do I have to run to you everytime I hear it??? Like someone else on here said, he's getting bored.... Give him lots of love and attention when he responds to his name... Don't give treats every time cuz otherwise he'd expect it everytime, and unless your prepared to give him a treat every single time you say Ziggy for the rest of his life, I recommend not to do that, lol....

So yeah, pay attention to how he reacts about other things. If he doesn't respond to anything, than it's a hearing issue. But otherwise he's just trying to be stubborn and defiant. He's in the terrible 2's stage, lol...

  • Maybe your saying it too much? if you constantly are saying his name, he may get bored. Try feeding him when he comes to his name so he learns that his name means food.
also, try taking him to the vet, he may have wax impacted on his eardrums, or a birth defect.

  • Do you call your dog over to discipline him ever? Probably not, but if you do, that could be the reason why he doesn't like to respond. And make sure he's not losing his hearing.
